Given the circumstances in the country, all such licenses should be canceled and the premises should be taken over by Pakistan army. Also all the industry using explosives in high risk areas should be shut down.

It is very sad that while hundreds of civilians, soldiers, policemen are dying whereas thousands of of kilograms of explosives and detonators are freely moving through Pakistan. It means that people at the top of security pyramid are responsible for terrorism in Pakistan because they are allowing manufacture and distribution of explosives.

It is amazing that explosives that are being used to attack ISI, army and police are being originated from manufacturers within Pakistan !!! However, given how much corrupt we are, this is still not unbelievable.

1). All major leaders in Pakistan including Nawaz Sharif and Asif Zardari do not pay any taxes despite having billions of dollars in assets.

2). Major political leaders have failed to challenge terrorism both politically and ideologically . This points to not only lack of political will on part of political leadership but also lack of their commitment to Pakistan.

3). Our leaders and elders are divided by sectarianism, thus paying more importance to sectarian divides than to peaceful coexistence and equality.

4). Our leaders are more interested in dividing national wealth and political power among their relatives. Nawaz, Zardari as well as ordinary officers are an example of this behavior. The merit comes secondary to personal relationships.

5). Our religious leadership is worse than pigs, they preach Jihad and hatred against America, but practically they encourage and endorse murder of fellow muslims through suicide attacks on civilians in Pakistan.

6). Even our army chief wants to settle his children and himself in America and United Kingdom as shown by Musharraf and many of his colleagues. How much can we trust army to be able to defend Pakistan if there is a conflict of interest.

This is especially important in Waziristan. However, our military commanders are best placed to decide the timing. As in Swat our army can suffer huge losses if they step in without adequate equipment such as helicopters, drones, night vision, and other forms of electronic surveillance.

The attacks on GHQ , bombings in Peshawar and Lahore have made it mandatory that a punishing response is given to terrorists. Action shall be taken against Mehsud tribesmen in a manner that those who stand against Pakistan are annihilated. We don't need and want any Wazir or Mehsud if they carry out terrorism against Pakistan. The Mehsud/Wazirs shall be murdered indiscriminately unless they stop their against Pakistan.

There shall be no compromise on security of Pakistan. The activities of Americans shall be halted immediately. There are too instances where American diplomats or their henchmen have been found delivering weapons and even explosives, what to say about terrorists.

The Pakistan army HQ has come under attack, and army has failed to do enough to safe guard it. This definitely brings into questions the capability of the army to secure critical assets related to defense of Pakistan. Pakistan army is failing to develop into an intelligent, modern force that has understanding and capability to challenge to address challenges of extremism and internal/external security.

Pakistan army is a force that is focused too much on domestic politics, and various business oriented enterprises such as industry, plots etc. The shortcomings of Pakistan army and its professionalism are now being exposed in this critical junction of our history. Today's happenings are showing that Pakistan army is a failing institution that needs to to reinvent itself in order to save itself and also Pakistan.

Today, I also attended welcome party at my university. I was supposed to go to Islamabad for registration of my car, but then decided not to go at the last moment because of the feeling that it would not be appropriate because of lack of staff in government offices on Saturdays.

I was very sad because of what is happening in Pakistan and requested the student community to scale down their party and also to finish early keeping in view security challenges. It was sad to see that Telecom faculty did not attend the party although their students are in majority on the campus. The organization of the party was also left to a lone faculty member which showed how pathetic and uncooperative we are as a community.

On this occasion, I also requested the students to express solidarity with the victims of Peshawar bomb blast and with the Pakistan army that is trying to fight this menace. It must be noted that the Director on this occasion expressed sorrow for the bomb blast victims but failed to express solidarity with Pakistan army. This shows the lack of leadership and the confusion that surrounds the war on terror in Pakistan.

I ask all Pakistanis and muslims, whether attacks on Pakistan army, police and forceful subjugation of Pakistan's people is justifiable in the version of Islam being followed by sympathizers of Taliban ?

I want to ask Imran and Fazl-ur-Rahman whether they support killing of our army , police, and civilians in all these horrific attacks. It is strange that we never see forceful condemnation of terrorist attacks from Imran Khan and other such leaders. These people are working on politically facilitating Taliban in their designs. They are foreign agents, who want to ease internal collapse by creating political and religious confusion or in other words ideological confusion.

It is the time that we forcefully confront people who are creating ideological confusion. These people must be made to shut up and should be totally isolated.

They have done really well against extremist insurgents in Swat and Malakand. The extremist insurgents are extremely well armed, they have capabilities to destroy tanks, and many tanks have been destroyed. They have been trying to shoot down helicoptors and aeroplanes. They have huge quantities of weapons and endless access to manpower and ammunition.

However one thing that America and its allies must answer is why Pakistani Taliban have American weapons and ammunition ? American congress, media, public and Pakistani people and their government have a right to know why extremists in Pakistan have access to endless supply of american weapons and ammunition. It has also been well known that extremist have access to high tech intelligence on movement of Pakistani troops ?

On the other hand, Pakistan is being forced to commit large number of troops while being denied modern weapons such as helicopters, fighter planes, night vision equipment and even bullet proof jackets. Why ? Is this a scheme to have Pakistan army defeated at the hands of so called extremists ?

What I have said here is public knowledge in Peshawar, Pakistan. If you talk to people from insurgency hit areas and ask them about what sort of weapons Pakistani Taliban's have. They would tell you that Talibans have most modern guns and other kinds of equipments whose origin is American ? Now Americans will obviously claim that Afghan army must have sold weapons given to them or some of these weapons have been looted in Pakistan during various attacks on supply trucks and so on. But obviously this is not the whole truth ?

The American congress, media and its people must find out who is funding extremists in Pakistan and why ?

The truth is that extremism is an imperialist tool to destabilize Pakistan in order to impose another imperialist geopolitical order and to de-nuclearize a muslim country.

 Comments

Refugee Crisis in Swat

Whenever there is natural or man made calamity, there are large number of refugees. A problem accompanying is determining needs of these people and effectively managing these needs. Now , there is usually a lot of corruption and mismanagement involved in the whole process. This results in wastage of donor money and further suffering for the affected people.

Main problems in managing a refugee crisis are :

1). Collecting and sharing statistics on refugees.

2). Collecting and sharing information on aid being distributed to the refugees by various agencies.

3). Determining the needs of the refugees in real time, and sharing this information with the relief organizations to help in planning and effective execution.

4). Sharing information about steps taken by relief agencies to avoid duplication of effort and thus to use available resources in the optimal manner.

5). Sharing all the information with public and governments to ensure effective response.

6). All the agencies should use common platform for collecting statistics and sharing high level information.

"Whether they can safely take control of weapons, equipment and personal related to nuclear program ?"

The USA is not concerned about helping Pakistan in any substantial way in fighting this war on terror. They will never give us helicopters that we need desperately, they will never give us drones, real time satellite images , ability to listen and jam communications of various kinds and other sensitive technologies needed by Pakistan army to fight this war.

The USA and allies want us to push our army into this war, while at the same time trying to ensure that Pakistan army is defamed and ultimately defeated. It must be realized that some one is providing extremists weapons, money and extremely sophisticated intelligence. Only very resourceful countries can mount such a sophisticated operation where such weapons, intelligence, and extremist ideology is used to target Pakistan.

The answer is that now it is open that Americans are only interested in pushing Pakistan to wall, where they can take control of its strategic assets in controlled manner while ensuring its future direction in terms of geography and so on. Extremism is an imperialist tool that is being used to target and destabilize Pakistan by America, India and Isreal.

The main reason is why would muslim extremists target a mainly muslim country, which is soundly based on Islamic constitution, and whose population is traditional muslim society. The nation is not following american dictats out of conviction but only out of political compulsion. Why muslim extremist don't use their forces to target americans in neigbouring Afghanistan. Why these muslim extremist only appeared after Americans established themselves firmly in Afghanistan , and indians and Israelis gained a firm foothold in Afghanistan. It is an open secret that billions of dollars are being spent to pay, recruit and fund the extremism in Pakistan, who is doing that and whose objectives are being served here ?

In a recent episode, a huge quantity of gold belonging to a mullah were seized. The reason was the Mullah only liked to get paid for his services in gold bars. Who is paying dollars and gold bars to Mullahs ?

The walls are made up of brick with plaster on the inside. With high summer temperatures in Peshawar/Pakistan these walls are getting heated, and as a result the whole room is getting heated. I want to insulate these walls from inside. I am wondering what are my options. Some options that I can think of include :

1). Fixing thick wooden boards on the inside wall. These wooden boards can give some styling as well as provide insulation.

If we win this war, we can win the war against terrorism. If we get defeated, terrorism will walkover whole of Pakistan in coming months.

The only similarity to this war is beginning of muslim war against Chengiz Khan and subsequent spread of mongolian hordes:

"Chengiz Khan started war by using his horsemen to carry out lootings and killings on muslim frontiers. This annoyed muslim king , who went after Chengiz Khan with a mighty force of 300,000 soldiers. Chengiz Khan trapped this force in mountains virtually destroying this force and this broke down the back bone of muslim defence. This ensured that Chengiz and mongolian hordes went on a winning offensive virtually unopposed by any serious force through large parts muslim world and europe."

The same applies to fight in Swat. Taliban have deliberately annoyed and invited Pakistan's army into the Swat. Now taliban seem to be losing and moving back to Swat from Buner and other areas. Pakistan army has limited mobility of movement in Swat, and no experience, knowledge and preparation for street to street fighting. Pakistan army is still unable to stop FM radio operated by Taliban.

If Pakistan army rush large number of troops without adequate strategy, equipment, support and intelligence Taliban will surely kill large number of them through ambushes, improvised explosive devices and mines. The result will be demoralized army which will not be able to hold onto whole of NWFP on one hand and rest of Pakistan on the other hand as well.

Americans and their allies are hoping for exactly this kind of scenario where Taliban inflict heavy defeat on Pakistan army. This would allow them to force their conditions on Pakistan, foremost of which will be de-nuclearization to stop nuclear weapons from falling into Taliban hands. Such a deal may be offered to Pakistan in return for protection against india and for military support against Taliban.

Since Americans want to ensure Pakistan to be defeated by terrorist, therefore they are unwilling to extend any meaningful military help to Pakistan including provision of large number of attack and transportation helicopters, drones, jamming/listening equipments for FM and other communications, night goggles and so on. At the same time, Americans are pushing Pakistan to shun every option of dialogue for peace and go blindly into a war in which there is only death and destruction for Pakistan.

Pakistan army has to be very careful while moving into Swat.

1). They should move very slowly ensuring lowest possible causalities and losses.

2). Pakistan army should force Taliban to come out and attack them thus trapping them in pitched battles, which Pakistan army hopefully will win with minimum losses to Pakistan army and total annihilation for Taliban.

3). Pakistan army should block all exit routes for Taliban.

4). There should be no take prisoners strategy in this fight.

5). Pakistan army should go for slow, safe and effective strategy rather than rushing in. Only through patience we can ensure that Taliban make maximum number of mistakes and thus ensure crushing defeat for Taliban.

6). We should employ a make or break security strategy where we are partners in war on terror only if Americans and their allies provide us real and meaningful help and do not stab in the back in these testing times.

7). Pakistan army should dialogue and surrender options to Taliban and apply maximum pressure to divide Taliban ranks.

American strategy of ensuring Pakistan's defeat at the hands of Taliban may or may not mean denuclearization of Pakistan. This strategy may result in nuclear weapons, biological weapons and other weapons of mass destruction and expertize involved in producing these into the hands of Taliban and their allies Al-Qaeda. It is upto American media, policy makers and American public to act swiftly and change American policy in meaningful manner in order to ensure that Pakistan gets all the required resources to win this war on terror, especially battle of Swat. War in Swat is no ordinary war, it will definitely have deep and long lasting impact on the security of whole world.

1). Suicide bombings against muslims and fellow Pakistanis ?
2). Killing of our policemen and soldiers ?
3). Words and actions against sovereignty of Pakistan ?
4). Calling Pakistan's constitution and parliament as un-islamic ?

Jamat-e-Islami and its fellow Jamat-Ulema Islam are infact tactically supporting Taliban's Jihad against fellow muslims and Pakistan. They are always condemning army action, but never condemn Taliban atrocities against common citizens, army and police. The religious political parties never condemn violation of Pakistan's sovereignty by Taliban, they never condemn Taliban for their links with India and Isreal. The only justification they have is that Pakistan is United States ally in war on terror, therefore somehow Taliban's actions against Pakistan are totally justified, whereas Pakistan state is on the wrong side. Pakistan's religious political parties fail to explain if Taliban want to fight against Americans then why are they attacking Pakistan ? Taliban should be going to Afghanistan to fight Americans rather than trying to destabilize Pakistan ? Pakistan's religious parties are more interested in twisting Islam to ensure destruction of Muslims, rather than seriously putting effort to stop others from damaging Pakistan and its muslim population.

Jamat Islami and other similar religious parties and ulema are not only behaving un-islamic but also as un-patriotic. We have large number of ulema who never bother to read meaning of Quran and Hadith. To them islam is to beat up woman, put woman behind walls, beat up ordinary people, cut peoples hands and to give all the legal powers to clergy without the luxury of written laws.

One section of muslim clergy believes that Quran and Hadith is Islamic law , so we don't need written constitution. Our clergy also believes that we don't need modern elected government as well. To be truthful, Quran and Hadith only provides guidelines for Islamic constitution but no definite and final legal framework. Thus we can design our governance structure and legal code within the guidelines provided by Quran and Hadith and according to the best practices of the time.

History of Jamat Islami:
Maulana Maudodi declared Jihad of Kashmir as un-islamic in 1948 ? Can we see a thread of common thinking with present situation. Whenever we have to act to defend ourselves against foreign agression , Jamat Islami some how comes with excuses to deny us our rights of self defense.

Constitution of Pakistan is Islamic.
Parliament, Office of Prime Minister and other constitutional offices and bodies are 100% Islamic according to Quran and Hadith.

May our ignorant ulema go to hell because they don't understand and some of them may never undertand because they dont want to undertand because they are greedy, ameen.

 Comments

Army strategy in Swat

Pakistan army is issuing regular briefing that it has killed so many taliban everyday. How come ? They still seem to have no control over Buner, Malakand and Swat ? There are reports of endless artillery bombardments, air strikes, helicopter strikes, use of tanks and so on. And still at the end of day, despite displacing millions of people they have no control over these areas.

The answer is the strategy being applied by Pakistan army is totally wrong. Pakistan army do not need a direct and total reliance on heavey artillary and bombings. Pakistan army may be big in numbers but it is not smart. Being not smart means that they even don't know how to effectively use numeric superiority on their territory.

What Pakistan army needs is numbers to take control of every village, every road, every street and every mountain pass. They have to go to every house, assure protection to their people and find out about Taliban. They have to deny operational space to taliban. Taliban can be taken out without displacing people , but this is only possible if Pakistan army has guts to link up its own people. Pakistan army also has to demonstrate better understanding and capability of its own land.

Unfortunately, at present Pakistan army has failed to demonstrate willingness to link up with its own people in Swat and other areas, it has demonstrated poor knowledge of its own terrain(villages, mountains, streets) and it has been totally unsympathetic towards its own people. People hate Taliban, but ruthless bombings being employed by Pakistan army ensures that they start hating Pakistan even more.

For God sake, we need an intelligent counter insurgency strategy based on capture, control and link up with our own people. Once we start controlling ground, only then we will be able to get ground intelligence and be able to take out taliban leadership and footsoldiers. People hate Taliban so much that there is open and publicly available man to man intelligence on these people, but somehow our mighty army and intelligence agencies don't see it. Perhaps this is because our generals, politicians and bureaucracy needs strong grounds for getting hold of American dollars and they are not interested in protecting their own people. Also the children and wealth of our top leadership down upto bureacrats is in America and Europe and they are not bothered when ordinary Pakistanis suffer.

 Comments

Extremists should not be considered as Muslims

Extremists have attacked Pakistani state. They refuse to accept our constitution, our parliament. They kill our army and our police and they destroy our schools. In this situation it is very sad that some political parties are still trying to defend these people. How can Jamat Islami defend actions like slaughtering our policemen and soldiers ? How can they accept refusal to accept superemacy of constitution and superemacy of parliament of Islamic republic of Pakistan. Not only that but these extremists have denied the legitimacy of freedom struggle of Kashmiri Mujahideen.

Under these circumstances, Pakistani people should declare Talibans as infidals and join together to ensure complete destruction of Taliban in Pakistan. There should now be no soft corner for these people, and they should be taken out with ruthless force.

It is surprising that Pakistan army is unable to link up with its own people in Buner , Malakand and Swat. Especially in Buner and Malakand people hated Taliban so much that they formed Lashkars to fight taliban. Army is still unable to take targeted actions against taliban and is relying on bombardments leading to heavey civilian damages while there is no reliable and authentic estimate of taliban casualities. Despite army operation taliban seems to operating freely and with confidence. Even while civilian volunteers were operating they were doing better job as compared to army. This is incompetence by Pakistan army. Pakistan army can not claim to be unfamiliar with its own territory and its own people. Pakistan army should take action with full preparation, and numbers are important here. Every street, every road, every access point, mountain passes, campable areas used by insurgents should be occupied. Numeric superiority and 24-hour vigilance and better training of our forces should be used to deny physical space to extremists. And extremists should be taken out without mercy, there should be no take prisoners and there should only take out policy against these peoples. They don't deserve any mercy now. Enough is enough, now please take them out.

One main reason for rise of extremism in Pakistan is that Pakistan is an ally of America in war on terror. Pakistan would not be on receiving end of Islamic terrorism if it disassociates itself from America and its war on terror. In such a case, Pakistan would ensure internal unity and would be able to fight off internal dissent. War on terror is fueling extremism and instability in Pakistan to the point that Pakistani state has lost control and is on point of disintegration.

If Americans are unwilling or non-serious in this war, then we should immediately back out of this war. If Americans are serious then they should immediately provide us all the counter insurgency equipment including night goggles, bullet proof jackets, equipment for blocking fm transmissions, helicopters , drones and all other equipment needed/demanded by Pakistan army. In addition , funding and all other necessities should be arranged by American and Europe to accomodate millions of refugees.

Terrorism is an ideology and only ideology can defeat terrorism. However, it is essential that military means are used to physically flush out terrorists/extremists from Buner and whole of Swat. At the same time, political and religious establishment should be brought together to oppose extremism and terrorism. Unless, political and religious establishment speak out against these extermists Pakistan can not win this war against extremism.

What is happening is that political and religious leaderships keeps quite when extremist take over areas and bomb civilians, army and police. However, the same political and religious leadership always speaks against army, police and government when the government reacts and collateral damage happens.

At the same time, army operations have been totally useless. Army does not seem to have intelligence or willingness to take on militants. The movement they move into an area , they are content with bombing and use of artillery. Do our most intelligent army officers seriously believe that they can defeat these taliban by bombing whole villages to the ground ?

 Comments

Jamming FM Radios and more

It is now reported in press that United States may be interested in jamming illegal FM radios in Pakistan and Afghanistan. This is some thing which has been goining on for years with devastating results for people of Swat. I wonder why Americans ignored this for years ? Was it deliberate ? Is there a hidden agenda that is active to promote extremism and terrorism within Pakistan ?

This is fine that they have now realized that illegal jamming FM radios is essential for winning against extremism. But there are other steps:

1). Pakistan should be provided jamming capabilities.
2). Pakistan should be provided drones. Our troops can not move around hilly areas in Swat and Waziristan safely if they don't have air protection.
3). Pakistan should be provided capabilities to listen to wireless and possibly block wireless communications. Taliban commanders are using wireless extensively and this needs to be taken care of.
4). Pakistan needs helicopters both fighter, transport and rescue in order to act swiftly against insurgency.
5). Americans need to stop movement of money and weapons to Taliban. Taliban have access to endless supply of dollars, intelligence and weapons some one is supplying these and Americans need to stop that supply if they are honest in this war on terror.
6). Americans should not stand in the way of justice in Pakistan.
7). Americans need to win over people of Pakistan rather than its elites.

Americans have spent loads of money for bribing generals and then politicians but they have not increased our capability to fight this war in any real, meaningful way.

 Comments

Taliban and Class divide

This story from the news is true that Taliban have used class divide to gain popularity in rural areas. They have forced landlords(Khans of Swat) to flee and handed over their property to poor farmers and villagers. This way they have ensured loyalty of majority of population. However, this practice in itself is unislamic and is more of communist/imperialist practice. Islam in fact supports class divides while stressing justice and equal rights for every body. But according to Islam you have to accept your circumstances and struggle for the survival. However, there is supposed to be a support system for those who can not support themselves and their families. Having said this, you can not just grab/steal other peoples money/property using class divide as an excuse because such an excuse is totally unislamic.

Link : http://thenews.jang.com.pk/top_story_detail.asp?Id=21586

PESHAWAR: The Taliban have advanced deeper into Pakistan by engineering a class revolt that exploits profound fissures between a small group of wealthy landlords and their landless tenants, according to government officials and analysts here.

The strategy cleared a path to power for the Taliban in the Swat Valley, where the government allowed Islamic law to be imposed this week, and it carries broad dangers for the rest of Pakistan, particularly the militantsí main goal, the populous heartland of the Punjab.

In Swat, accounts from those who have fled now make clear that the Taliban seized control by pushing out about four dozen landlords who held the most power. To do so, the militants organised peasants into armed gangs that became their shock troops, the residents, government officials and analysts said.

The approach allowed the Taliban to offer economic spoils to people frustrated with lax and corrupt government even as the militants imposed a strict form of Islam through terror and intimidation.

ìThis was a bloody revolution in Swat,î said a senior Pakistani official who oversees Swat, speaking on the condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation by the Taliban. ìI wouldnít be surprised if it sweeps the established order of Pakistan.î

The Talibanís ability to exploit class divisions adds a new dimension to the insurgency and is raising alarm about the risks to Pakistan, which remains largely feudal. Analysts and other government officials warn that the strategy executed in Swat is easily transferable to the Punjab, saying that the province, where militant groups are already showing strength, is ripe for the same social upheavals that have convulsed Swat and the tribal areas.

Mahboob Mahmood, a Pakistani-American lawyer and former classmate of President Obama’s, said, ìThe people of Pakistan are psychologically ready for a revolution.î ìThe militants, for their part, are promising more than just proscriptions on music and schooling,î he said. ìThey are also promising Islamic justice, effective government and economic redistribution.î

The Taliban strategy in Swat, an area of 1.3 million people with fertile orchards, vast plots of timber and valuable emerald mines, unfolded in stages over five years, analysts said. The momentum of the insurgency built in the past two years, when the Taliban, reinforced by seasoned fighters from the tribal areas with links to Al Qaeda, fought the Pakistani Army to a standstill, said a Pakistani intelligence agent who works in the Swat region.

The insurgents struck at any competing point of power: landlords and elected leaders ó who were usually the same people ó and an underpaid and unmotivated police force, said Khadim Hussain, a linguistics and communications professor at Bahria University in Islamabad.

At the same time, the Taliban exploited the resentments of the landless tenants, particularly the fact that they had many unresolved cases against their bosses in a slow-moving and corrupt justice system, Hussain and residents who fled the area said.

Their grievances were stoked by a young militant, Maulana Fazlullah, who set up an FM radio station in 2004 to appeal to the disenfranchised. The broadcasts featured easy-to-understand examples using goats, cows, milk and grass. By 2006, Fazlullah had formed a ragtag force of landless peasants armed by the Taliban, said Hussain and former residents of Swat.

At first, the pressure on the landlords was subtle. One landowner was pressed to take his son out of an English-speaking school offensive to the Taliban. Others were forced to make donations to the Taliban.

Then, in late 2007, Shujaat Ali Khan, the richest of the landowners, his brothers and his son, Jamal Nasir, the mayor of Swat, became targets. After Shujaat Ali Khan, a senior politician in the Pakistan Muslim League-Q, narrowly missed being killed by a roadside bomb, he fled to London. A brother, Fateh Ali Mohammed, a former senator, left, too, and now lives in Islamabad. Nasir also fled.

Later, the Taliban published a ìmost wantedî list of 43 prominent names, said Muhammad Sher Khan, a landlord who is a politician with the Pakistan People’s Party, and whose name was on the list. All those named were ordered to present themselves to the Taliban courts or risk being killed, he said. “When you know that they will hang and kill you, how will you dare go back there?” Khan, hiding in the Punjab, said in a telephone interview. “Being on the list meant “Don’t come back to Swat.”

One of the main enforcers of the new order was Ibn-e-Amin, a Taliban commander from the same area as the landowners, called Matta. The fact that Amin came from Matta, and knew who was who there, put even more pressure on the landowners, Hussain said.

According to news reports, Amin was arrested in August 2004 on suspicion of having links to Al Qaeda and was released in November 2006. Another Pakistani intelligence agent said Amin often visited a madrasa in North Waziristan, the stronghold of Al Qaeda in the tribal areas, where he apparently received guidance.

Each time the landlords fled, their tenants were rewarded. They were encouraged to cut down the orchard trees and sell the wood for their own profit, the former residents said. Or they were told to pay the rent to the Taliban instead of their now absentee bosses.

Two dormant emerald mines have reopened under Taliban control. The militants have announced that they will receive one-third of the revenues. Since the Taliban fought the military to a truce in Swat in February, the militants have deepened their approach and made clear who is in charge.

When provincial bureaucrats visit Mingora, they must now follow the Talibanís orders and sit on the floor, surrounded by Taliban bearing weapons, and in some cases wearing suicide bomber vests, the senior provincial official said.

In many areas of Swat, the Taliban have demanded that each family give up one son for training as a Taliban fighter, said Mohammad Amad, executive director of a non-governmental group, the Initiative for Development and Empowerment Axis.

A landlord who fled with his family last year said he received a chilling message last week. His tenants called him in Peshawar to tell him his huge house was being demolished, he said in an interview here.

The most crushing news was about his finances. He had sold his fruit crop in advance, though at a quarter of last yearís price. But even that smaller yield would not be his, his tenants said, relaying the Taliban message. The buyer had been ordered to give the money to the Taliban instead.

But there are two types of terrorist and Taliban, one that are interested in attacking west and fighting America in Afghanistan and elsewhere. The other kind is more interested in killing muslims using all kinds of excuses including sectarinsm, unislamic governance, accusation of siding with west, western life style, moderate thinking and so on. You name an excuse, and these people are ready to kill muslims. Now more terrorist attacks have taken place in muslim world and in countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan rather than in the west.

The thing is there must be some one supporting and funding these organization, and there must be some geo-strategic objectives that they want to achieve at the end of the day. Taliban are being richly funded, and you can see it if you live in my part of the world. Any one who can gather 10 or more men is provided latest Toyota Hilux, guns , ammunition, communication equipment and loads of money by the Taliban.

In practice, billions are being spent on raising these armies and this money is coming from some where. This money is not coming simply from drugs, and these weapons are not simply looted weapons. Some one funds suicide bombers and pays their families. Some one pays for the explosives and makes these available in these remote areas.

Some one provides high level and sophisticated intelligence against Pakistan army and other security apparatus. In one instance satellite imagery that showed movement of Pakistani troops was caught in the hands of Taliban in Waziristan. You can guess what was the source. There is a good chance that this money is coming from tax payers in America, Isreal and India. The objective is to denuclearize Pakistan by using monster of extremism. The reason is Pakistan can not be attacked directly so it must be attacked indirectly through darkness of extremism where it is most vulnerable.

A huge quantity of weapons and other equipments are being stolen from NATO supplies that pass through Peshawar(NWFP) on the way to Afghanistan. Rumors are circulating that unhindered theft of these weapons on large scale is deliberate and is aimed at arming militias and warlords that would take over Peshawar and other major cities of NWFP in coming months. Our parliament and elected representatives should take immediate notice of this and stop NATO supplies from passing through Pakistan. There is no we can ensure protection to these supplies and otherwise we are arming the people(taliban) that we are supposed to fight and fanning extremism at the same time.

It is good that government has acted to control situation in Swat, and taken some other steps to heal the wounds that are resulting in spreading extremism. But government needs to start an ideological fight against terrorism and extremism. We need weapons, surveillance and vigilance but most of all we need strong ideological focus to fight the ideology of terrorism. In the meanwhile, american and eurepean citizens should evaluate their military options and true intentions of the governments critically and find out whether they have done more to end extremism or alternately they have promoted extremism.

There are many examples of this:

1). It has bombed its own people.

2). It has allowed Taliban to expand their influence and even secretly aided many of those groups.

3). It has helped drone attacks rather than fighting to stop these attacks.

4). It is more eager for real estate and other kinds of business in addition to politics rather than its core job of protecting Pakistan's sovereignty.

5). It is eager to bring marshal laws, capture Islamabad, hold people of Pakistan hostage and bring a captive judiciary while attacking free judiciary and free media.

6). It attacks independence of people of Pakistan in cooperation with foreign powers such as United States, and United Kingdom rather than fighting to protect our honor and our independence.

We want reforms in Pakistan army that ensures that its officers and their children do not have foreign links of any kind including education, business and nationality. Our army officers should be totally focused on Pakistan and that means their wives and children should stay put in Pakistan. Our army officers should not be involved in any politics and business of any kind apart from their professional, organizational duties. Our army officers should be in touch with people of Pakistan and rooted among them so that if they are deployed any where in Pakistan they have local knowledge and be able to talk to man on the street all over the Pakistan. Army should ensure that people of Pakistan love it and have complete confidence over it.

View from the other side Col (r) Harish Puri

Tuesday, April 14, 2009
Dear Gen Kayani,

Sir, let me begin by recounting that old army quip that did the rounds in the immediate aftermath of World war II: To guarantee victory, an army should ideally have German generals, British officers, Indian soldiers, American equipment and Italian enemies.

A Pakistani soldier that I met in Iraq in 2004 lamented the fact that the Pakistani soldier in Kargil had been badly let down firstly by Nawaz Sharif and then by the Pakistani officers' cadre. Pakistani soldiers led by Indian officers, , he believed, would be the most fearsome combination possible. Pakistani officers, he went on to say, were more into real estate, defence housing colonies and the like.

As I look at two photographs of surrender that lie before me, I can't help recalling his words. The first is the celebrated event at Dhaka on Dec 16, 1971, which now adorns most Army messes in Delhi and Calcutta. The second, sir, is the video of a teenage girl being flogged by the Taliban in Swat -- not far, I am sure, from one of your Army check posts.

The surrender by any Army is always a sad and humiliating event. Gen Niazi surrendered in Dhaka to a professional army that had outnumbered and outfought him. No Pakistani has been able to get over that humiliation, and 16th December is remembered as a black day by the Pakistani Army and the Pakistani state. But battles are won and lost – armies know this, and having learnt their lessons, they move on.

But much more sadly, the video of the teenager being flogged represents an even more abject surrender by the Pakistani Army. The surrender in 1971, though humiliating, was not disgraceful. This time around, sir, what happened on your watch was something no Army commander should have to live through. The girl could have been your own daughter, or mine.

I have always maintained that the Pakistani Army, like its Indian counterpart, is a thoroughly professional outfit. It has fought valiantly in the three wars against India, and also accredited itself well in its UN missions abroad. It is, therefore, by no means a pushover. The instance of an Infantry unit, led by a lieutenant colonel, meekly laying down arms before 20-odd militants should have been an aberration. But this capitulation in Swat, that too so soon after your own visit to the area, is an assault on the sensibilities of any soldier. What did you tell your soldiers? What great inspirational speech did you make that made your troops back off without a murmur? Sir, I have fought insurgency in Kashmir as well as the North-East, but despite the occasional losses suffered (as is bound to be the case in counter-insurgency operations), such total surrender is unthinkable.

I have been a signaller, and it beats me how my counterparts in your Signal Corps could not locate or even jam a normal FM radio station broadcasting on a fixed frequency at fixed timings. Is there more than meets the eye?

I am told that it is difficult for your troops to "fight their own people." But you never had that problem in East Pakistan in 1971, where the atrocities committed by your own troops are well documented in the Hamoodur Rahman Commission Report. Or is it that the Bengalis were never considered "your own" people, influenced as they were by the Hindus across the border? Or is that your troops are terrified by the ruthless barbarians of the Taliban?

Sir, it is imperative that we recognise our enemy without any delay. I use the word "our" advisedly – for the Taliban threat is not far from India's borders. And the only force that can stop them from dragging Pakistan back into the Stone Age is the force that you command. In this historic moment, providence has placed a tremendous responsibility in your hands. Indeed, the fate of your nation, the future of humankind in the subcontinent rests with you. It doesn't matter if it is "my war" or "your war" – it is a war that has to be won. A desperate Swati citizen's desperate lament says it all – "Please drop an atom bomb on us and put us out of our misery!" Do not fail him, sir.

But in the gloom and the ignominy, the average Pakistani citizen has shown us that there is hope yet. The lawyers, the media, have all refused to buckle even under direct threats. It took the Taliban no less than 32 bullets to still the voice of a brave journalist. Yes, there is hope – but why don't we hear the same language from you? Look to these brave hearts, sir – and maybe we shall see the tide turn. Our prayers are with you, and the hapless people of Swat.

The New York Times predicts that Pakistan will collapse in six months. Do you want to go down in history as the man who allowed that to happen?

These have included high profile bombings, killings and kidnappings. On top of these, Pakistan's dear friends have time and again attacked us with drones, issued dire warnings and negative statements. Pakistan's dear friends have done their best to make things worst for Pakistan and Pakistanis. United Kingdom has recently arrested 12 Pakistani students, most of whom are totally innocent. This shows how good western intelligence is on their own soil, where they have 24-hour CCTV and total control over all kinds of communications. The students were arrested from universities and not from Pakistan's totally unregulated tribal areas.

Coming back to Pakistan, we have had a major revolution when government had to bow to people's demand and restore independent judiciary. The democratic also successfully negotiated with militants through moderate elements and reached an agreement to establish rule of law. This is a major victory for government and people of Pakistan, because it takes away political initiative from extremists and terrorists. Now terrorists have no where to hide, and no excuses to sell to ordinary, disoriented or poor masses. This would ensure that politicians, army , clergy and the people can together face extremism from one platform as one people.

President of Pakistan, Mr. Asif Ali Zardari and ANP govt have acted wisely in negotiating this agreement. President of Pakistan did extremely well to get approval of parliament(national assembly) which ensures that whole of Pakistan is behind this agreement and thus world pressure can be ignored on the strength of will of the people.

Mr. Asif Ali Zardari had been extremely reluctant in restoring judiciary, and that impacted his popularity ratings very badly. However, since bowing to people of Pakistan and restoration of judiciary he has acted wisely. He first encouraged/allowed negotiated settlement of Swat conflict, and then created grounds for signing it.

Asif Zardari who was a bad boy and loser couple of days ago, is now definitely back in the political arena. However, he would have to do a lot in terms of improving his party's and its allies governance and take several other difficult but popular decisions. This may include ending drone attacks which is not going to be easy.

However, it is easy to see that with independent judiciary, an independent parliament, free media, and dynamic society led by lawyers, we are well set for a great future.

Count the number of suicide attacks in Islamic countries e.g. Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iraq and compare this number against the number in western countries including Europe and America ?

Seeing these figures, why West still thinks muslim terrorist are attacking West and America ? Al-Qaeda and its allied organization are fighting a Jihad against Islam, its followers and their countries. This is the hard fact established by number of bombings, number of dead and injured. It is not something which media and especially western analyzes or cares to analyze. But the fact is that all of its components including army, police and intelligence agencies are ill-equipped in terms of material support, as well as physical and tactical training and know-how.

A typical example is the thinking that if you put lot of guards around some high value target then you can probably prevent a terrorist attack. The result of this misconception is that suicide bombers always attack a crowd of security men usually killing dozens of security personnel.

Basically, to ensure minimum damage to police personal there should never be a crowd of them standing at one single point. Rather there should be multilayered security which is strategically placed to prevent suicide bombers or bombay style attack. These people should be able to absorb an initial suicide attack and fight back against trained/organized militant attack.

Also sniffer dogs and electronic gates should be deployed in larger numbers. Concrete slabs and blast absorbing walls should be placed around sensitive buildings.

If Americans are willing and eager to provide us technology to monitor electronic communications, to block signals such as fm radio and other kind of communications and to monitor areas 24 hours through air survillance (Drones) only then we can consider being partners in this so called war on terror. In any case, we should seek political route to minimize damage to Pakistan in this war rather than being partners to self destruction.
