It is true that Americans and West talks about stablizing Pakistan and protecting Pakistan against a Taliban(fundamentalist) take over. But there are two types of terrorist and Taliban, one that are interested in attacking west and fighting America in Afghanistan and elsewhere. The other kind is more interested in killing muslims using all kinds of excuses including sectarinsm, unislamic governance, accusation of siding with west, western life style, moderate thinking and so on. You name an excuse, and these people are ready to kill muslims. Now more terrorist attacks have taken place in muslim world and in countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan rather than in the west.
The thing is there must be some one supporting and funding these organization, and there must be some geo-strategic objectives that they want to achieve at the end of the day. Taliban are being richly funded, and you can see it if you live in my part of the world. Any one who can gather 10 or more men is provided latest Toyota Hilux, guns , ammunition, communication equipment and loads of money by the Taliban.
In practice, billions are being spent on raising these armies and this money is coming from some where. This money is not coming simply from drugs, and these weapons are not simply looted weapons. Some one funds suicide bombers and pays their families. Some one pays for the explosives and makes these available in these remote areas.
Some one provides high level and sophisticated intelligence against Pakistan army and other security apparatus. In one instance satellite imagery that showed movement of Pakistani troops was caught in the hands of Taliban in Waziristan. You can guess what was the source. There is a good chance that this money is coming from tax payers in America, Isreal and India. The objective is to denuclearize Pakistan by using monster of extremism. The reason is Pakistan can not be attacked directly so it must be attacked indirectly through darkness of extremism where it is most vulnerable.
A huge quantity of weapons and other equipments are being stolen from NATO supplies that pass through Peshawar(NWFP) on the way to Afghanistan. Rumors are circulating that unhindered theft of these weapons on large scale is deliberate and is aimed at arming militias and warlords that would take over Peshawar and other major cities of NWFP in coming months. Our parliament and elected representatives should take immediate notice of this and stop NATO supplies from passing through Pakistan. There is no we can ensure protection to these supplies and otherwise we are arming the people(taliban) that we are supposed to fight and fanning extremism at the same time.
It is good that government has acted to control situation in Swat, and taken some other steps to heal the wounds that are resulting in spreading extremism. But government needs to start an ideological fight against terrorism and extremism. We need weapons, surveillance and vigilance but most of all we need strong ideological focus to fight the ideology of terrorism. In the meanwhile, american and eurepean citizens should evaluate their military options and true intentions of the governments critically and find out whether they have done more to end extremism or alternately they have promoted extremism.
